The Southern Maidenhair Fern is a delicate mid-green plant that hangs from shiny, dark stems in a zig-zag pattern, forming a fine textured mound above the wiry, dark stems. As a deciduous fern, it will shed its leaves in the winter and grow them back in the spring. This species of fern prefers permanent wet crevices in limestone overhangs where other plants may have difficulty growing. It thrives in area with high pH/alkaline soils in the shade. The best use of a Southern Maidenhair Fern would be in a water garden or a shaded rock garden. Its length is 10-18 inches, and can spread 15-24 inches during its prime in the summer.
